I had a great time introducing some photographer friends of mine to one of my favorite places in the state, Vilander Bluff. With the largest bluffs on the Meramec River, to get the type of view seen here requires a little bit of effort. The Vilander Bluff Natural Area is a unit of the state park that is located at 7 miles (11 km) northeast of the main body of Its eponymous cliffs harbor unique natural communities, most notably a dry dolomite cliff community with over 200 ancient red cedar trees ( Juniperus virginiana ) that range in age from 200 to 500 years. A vast honeycomb of caves and underground streams can be found at this large park. You can go underground or visit the park’s Vilander Bluff Natural Area, which provides a panoramic view of the Meramec River.

2010-10-14 · Vilander Bluff is the tallest bluff located on the Meramec river and contains some of the oldest eastern red cedars in the state of Missouri and have been found to be between 200 and 500 years old. The trees survive and grow right out of the sides of the bluff, also if you’re lucky you might spot a osprey in the summer months as they nest at the bluff area. The 470-acre Meramec Farm is located on a bend of the beautiful, spring-fed Meramec River.
